When couples first picture their wedding day, sunshine often takes centre stage. Yet there’s a whole other world of romance, atmosphere and charm that comes alive once the air turns crisp and the nights draw in... At Larkspur Lodge, we’ve seen time and again how winter weddings can feel magical, full of warmth, intimacy and beauty.
If you’re considering a winter wedding, or simply curious about what it could look like, we’re here to walk you through the beauty of getting married in the cooler months. From seasonal tablescaping ideas, to what to wear for winter weddings, we’ll help you imagine just how stunning a celebration in our Knutsford wedding venue can be.
Why Winter Weddings are Worth It
Winter has previously been an overlooked season for weddings, but couples that choose it are rewarded with something unforgettable (and that little bit unique!). And, whilst summer can feel busy with packed diaries, a winter wedding gives your guests something special to look forward to at a quieter time of year.
The atmosphere is also unmatched. A winter wedding venue brings with it a natural intimacy. The glow of candles against our rustic brickwork, twinkling fairy lights overhead and rich seasonal styling colours combine to create a sense of cosiness that is just beautiful. And with guests expecting cooler weather, you can relax knowing your day will feel complete indoors.
For those searching for unique wedding locations, winter opens up endless possibilities. The season itself provides inspiration for styling, food and drink, allowing you to create an occasion that feels original and personal without relying on elaborate extras.
Winter Wedding Ideas and Inspiration
It’s easy to associate winter weddings with Christmas trees and mulled wine (which we love!), but the season offers much more than festive styling. Each winter month has its own character, and with it, a chance to bring in décor that reflects the mood.
December
Dreaming of a December celebration? The party season will be in full swing, so if you’d like to embrace that, opt for rich jewel tones, evergreen foliage and golden accents to achieve a gorgeous candlelit glow. If you’d prefer to steer clear of festive decor, you could opt for a more wintry, woodland-inspired look. Think soft whites, frosted branches, eucalyptus and silver details that feel seasonal without being tied to Christmas, creating a timeless atmosphere for your day.
January
January carries a quieter beauty. With its frosty mornings and stillness, it lends itself to a monochrome palette that feels effortlessly sophisticated. Think the timeless elegance of black tie translated into your wedding styling - crisp whites, inky blacks and sleek silvery accents. Candlelight enhances the drama, bouncing off polished glassware and metallic details to create an atmosphere that is both modern and classic.
February
The month of love, February naturally leans into romance. Dusky pinks, deep reds and bold florals paired with low lighting create a luxurious atmosphere. It’s a chance to capture the richness of winter while hinting at the coming of spring. You could also opt for a vintage-style wedding cake and quirky invites to fully embrace all the Valentine’s vibes.
By seeing each month in its own light, it’s clear that winter weddings aren’t just about Christmas. With thoughtful decor choices, you can make every month beautiful.
Winter Wedding Clothing Inspiration
Couples often wonder how styling works in colder months. But the truth is, winter fashion is full of elegance and possibility.
For brides, sleek long sleeves, high necklines and sculptural silhouettes feel modern yet timeless. Minimalist gowns in satin or crepe look striking against the season’s moody light, while statement sleeves or structured shoulders add drama without fuss. If you prefer something more playful, shorter hemlines paired with statement boots are a chic nod to the season.
Layering doesn’t have to mean bulky cover-ups. Sheer overskirts, delicate lace toppers or tailored blazers can create a fashion-forward look that still feels bridal. Think runway-inspired elegance rather than traditional “winter wear.”
For grooms and guests, winter offers the perfect excuse to embrace black tie or experiment with rich fabrics like velvet and wool. Bridesmaids can echo the monochrome trend with sleek gowns in black, ivory or metallics, or add depth with jewel-toned dresses that shimmer in candlelight.
The beauty of winter styling is that it feels cinematic. Every look, from minimalist chic to glamorous eveningwear, is heightened by the season’s natural backdrop of early sunsets, candlelit interiors and crisp countryside air.
